Back to school – a parent’s concern.

It is a new school session, after a very long holiday. I don’t know about you but one thing I have noticed is that once school resumes, it seems as if the children develop an unending cycle of colds, cough and other illnesses. This is especially true for the younger children. Children miss a lot of school days due to illness.  This could probably be because children come in close contact with other children who might have one infectious disease or the other. It could also be because the stress of school resumption as well as not eating as well as they should, bring down their immune levels.

Thank goodness, it is not just bad news all the way. I have also noticed that if we could put a few things in place, chances of our children coming down with flu like symptoms – catarrh, cough, head heaviness, fevers etc and other illnesses would be reduced.
So what do I do to protect my child?
ü Simple – build up his/her immunity. Yes, I know it sounds like the same old story but let me give you tips on how to go about it
o   Start them on an immune booster, daily. We all know that vitamin C helps to build one’s immunity. What a lot of us do not know is that not everything labeled vitamin C is absorbed or used by the body. In nature, vitamin C occurs together with a substance called ‘flavonoids’, which helps the body take in the vitamin C and use it. Most of the cheap vitamin C supplements are synthetic and does not have this substance, which means that it gets flushed out of the body without the body making any use of it. So when next, you want to buy Vitamin C for yourself or your child, check to see if it is natural and contains rosehips or bioflavonoids. Or simply ask your Rafar+ Pharmacist for advice on what Vitamin C is best for your child.
o   A combination immune booster does the job better than just vitamin C. There are excellent immune boosters, which work hand in hand with vitamin C to give you greater protection. Some are minerals and others are herbs from nature. Echinacea, Elderberry and Zinc are a few of such. Their effects are almost magical. Trust me, experience as a health professional and a mother has taught me.
ü Get your child to eat right. The maxim you are what you eat is so true. Really, how much of fruits and fresh vegetables does your child get to eat daily? The less processed food and the more of natural food  your child eats, the better for her.
